The Tie Bar: How to hold it down

Ah, the tie-bar, a sartorial staple reminiscent of simpler times. Times filled with three-martini lunches, lunar landings, and an ever present fear of nuclear obliteration. Nowadays things are different.

We’ve traded our cocktails for coconut water, moon landings for mars rovers, and as far as nuclear fall-out shelters go, well, we’ve got a lot of beer and a pool table downstairs. While some things may have changed, the classic appeal and functionality of the tie bar has not.

Here’s how to do it right:

Function: Remember, a tie bar does more than just secure the front and back of your tie, it secures the tie to your shirt. Just be sure you leave enough room between your tie’s knot and the bar or you’ll feel like you’re wearing an upside down noose.
Placement: Like with any of your sartorial choices, tie bar placement is a matter of personal preference. The most conservative and certainly most popular choice is between the 3^rd and 4^th buttons of your shirt. That being said, some more rakish gents may choose to lower the bar a bit for a different look.
Size: Your tie bar should never be larger than the width of your tie. Remember how we said all of your sartorial choices are a matter of personal preference? Well, prefer to not look bad. We like ours to span about 75% the width of the tie.

There you have it, it’s that easy. Now, if only we could figure out a way to bring back the three-martini lunch.
